The oil spill in the Gulf this year is now considered one of the worst environmental disasters in US history. It will take many years to understand the full ramifications of the spill, but we know it will have a significant impact on the environment and people of the Gulf region. What can we learn from this spill and other major environmental disasters of the last century? Can a better understanding of the past help us prevent and better mitigate disasters of the future? Join us this Fall Quarter to discuss these issues and more as we read This Borrowed Earth: Lessons from the Fifteen Worst Environmental Disasters around the World by Robert Emmet Hernan (2010).

The goal of this quarterly “brown bag” seminar is to discuss some of the environmental issues facing the northwest and the world today, through an analysis of current articles and readings. The seminar may include volunteer work, a field trip, and/or guest lectures.
