Earth Week

A Decade of Celebrating Earth Week at BCC!

BCC R-Building

In the spring 2000 the BCC Science Club (now the Student Science Association) decided to promote environmental awareness and Earth Day by giving out cookies and prizes to students and employees taking public transit or coming to campus as part of a car pool. Out of this idea grew a week of activities including a lecture on shade grown coffee, demonstrations on making paper, and a restoration project with the City of Bellevue. Thus the first Earth Week at BCC was born.

Since then, every April, BCC students have helped to make Earth Week a campus-wide event. The core of the event each year is a 5-day lecture series with connections to many of the disciplines on campus. In addition, we often host film showings, display information from local organizations, provide sustainable food options in the cafeteria, set up "green" car shows, "green" fashion shows, test for toxins in everyday products, and promote sustainable art displays. For the past 10 years we have also worked closely with the City of Bellevue Stream Team to participate in a local restoration project, contributing hundreds of volunteer hours to cleaning up local parks, planting trees and removing invasive weeds.

We are proud of our history, so we thought we would make a list of all of the speakers and talks that we have hosted for the past 10 years and share them with you. To our speakers - we thank you all for your contributions to our education! To the 1,000's (over 10,000 now) that have participated in our events - we thank you for coming to hear what we have to say!
