Earth Week Green Fashion Show - Monday, April 21

Earth Week will kick off this year by examining the products we wear and the personal care products that we use on our bodies. At 11:35 and 12:35 the BCC Cafeteria runway will light up with eco-fashion - from the higher end outdoor clothing of Nau to the upcycled fashion of Value Village to the organic comfort of Levis.

The show will feature clothing made from recycled and organically produced materials, as well as highlight the benefits of reusing, or upcycling, old clothing as a means of reducing waste. Models will in include BCC students, staff and faculty.

In addition to the fashion show, students can try non-toxic cosmetics and use computers in the cafeteria look up the safety of their cosmetics and personal care products on the Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep Cosmetics Safety Database.

Nau is a new innovative outdoor clothing company that is rethinking the way business is done. They started the business by focusing on the "triple bottom line" - balancing the needs of profit, people and the planet. They produce clothing made of eco-friendly products, including recycled polyester, corn-based synthetic fibers (PLA), Merino wool, and organic cotton. Nau also gives back the the community by donating 5% of their profits to social, humanitarian, and environmental non-profits.

Storm Drain MarkerFor over 50 years Value Village has been basing their business on the principles of giving back and providing opportunities. They are one of the leaders in making recycled (or "upcycled") clothing more popular and are responsible for keeping over 280 million pounds of wasted clothing and rags out of landfills.

BCC Earth Week is organized by the BCC Student Science Association. For more information contact Rob Viens in the BCC Science Division at rviens@bcc.ctc.edu or (425) 564-3158.
