Problem 1 English Version
Given the speed of sound is 345 m/sec in air at ~20C, 1 atm, and
an organ pipe which is open at both ends. In the following calculations,
ignore pipe width corrections for coupling of the sound from the pipe to
the open air.
-
a/ What should the length of the pipe be to sound A(440 cycles per second)
-
b/ What are the frequencies of the next two harmonics
-
c/ What would happen to the frequency if you replaced the air (primarily
nitrogen) with helium?
-
d/ Can you name the note (on the even tempered scale?) corresponding to
the new frequency?
