Student "Biography" Assignment

Both parts of this Assignment are due during Week 1 of the quarter -- before Saturday midnight -- Earlier is better!

Remember, I don't grade assignments submitted to incorrect locations or submitted after the deadline, so be sure to read all instructions very carefully! If you have any questions about assignment instructions, please post them to the Vista discussion boards right away!

Online classes can be a bit impersonal - It can be hard for me to get to know you, and class discussions are more difficult to follow when the speaker is anonymous. So your first assignment is to share a little information about yourself with me and with the rest of the class.

Part A - Information for the instructor (via regular email, not Vista)

First of all, I (as instructor) need to know the following. You may also share this information with your classmates in Part B, if you wish, but it's essential that you tell me:

1. Your full name and any preferred nickname.
2. All of the email addresses that you use.
3. The science and math classes you have taken, including when and where.
4. Any confidential or personal information you would like me to know.

Email all of the information above to me at gwjones@bellevuecollege.edu before the deadline. Don't send it via the course's Vista-Mail! In the subject line of your email, include YOUR NAME and ONLINE OCEAN 101 -- BIOGRAPHY PART A. Write your message as plain text in the message box, not as an attachment.

NOTE: I currently get hundreds of spams per day to my BCC email account...If you don't include the requested subject line information, your message is likely to be spam-filtered and I will not receive it. Plus, I have ~100 students in 3 different courses at 2 colleges this quarter, so I need all of the requested information in the subject line, in order to properly prioritize, record, and file my incoming messages. :)

Part B - Information for the whole class (via Vista Biography discussion board)

Write a two-paragraph (or more) "biography" about yourself and post it to the Student Biography Assignment discussion board. Have fun and be creative! Give the rest of the class some insight into who you are.

Information you may want to include in your bio:

• Where you were born and/or have lived, and where you live now. (Do not include a specific address or phone number.)
• Why you are interested in oceanography (or why you are taking this course, rather than another lab science).
• What field you work in or what career you would like to pursue.
• What you plan to major in and/or your academic interests.
• An interesting trip you took.
• Personal information -- kids, pets, interests, hobbies, etc.

Optional: Attach a photo/drawing of yourself.

Everyone needs to complete the following statement:

• "I promise myself I will do the following in order to succeed in this course, even if it is inconvenient..."

Be sure to post your Part B information to the correct Vista discussion board (the one called "STUDENT BIOGRAPHY ASSIGNMENT") before the deadline. Don't email or Vista-Mail it! In the subject line of your post, include YOUR NAME and BIOGRAPHY. Write your message as plain text in the message box, not as an attachment.
