This course is for students who have a strong foundation of beginning algebra (C or better in Math 097 or placement by assessment). We will be covering such topics integer exponents, linear equations and inequalities, graphing and slopes of lines, systems of equations and their applications, polynomial operations, factoring, rational and radical expressions and equations, and quadratic equations and their applications. These topics correspond to the Essentials and Topics 5-10 in your notebook, plus a few handouts that you will receive in class. There is a LOT of material here, all of it important and necessary for your success in future math classes.

This course includes both on-line and off-line activities. On-line activities include interactive comprehensive instruction with sound, graphics, animation and video. There are also periodic quizzes which are taken on-line. Online tutorial help sessions with a live tutor, through the Elluminate help system, will be a part of the course. Off-line activities include lectures, given as needed, homework assignments, quizzes, and tests.

In the first few days of class you will become acquainted with the Academic Systems software, its structure, and the tools and features that are available both on-line and off-line. The software does have a sound component so headsets have been provided with each computer.

I expect you to attend class each day we are scheduled to meet. It will be very difficult to pass this course if you do not come to class. You are responsible for all material covered and all announcements and assignments made at each class. In addition, points are earned for class attendance, one point per attended class, up to a maximum of 40 points for the quarter. Attendance will be taken in class on a daily basis: a sign-in sheet will be passed around during the first 10 minutes and only those present at that time are eligible for the point-of-the-day. You must work on math during class time to earn attendance credit.

A scientific calculator is required. You may also use a graphing calculator.

There are about 30 homework assignments this quarter. Each assignment is worth 3 points, and your 20 best scores will count for a total of 60 points from homework. Assignments must be turned in by 1:20 p.m. on the indicated due date. Late homework is penalized 1 point per day late. Beginning several weeks into the quarter, one third of the HW points will be earned by participation in the Elluminate help system. A 20 minute assessment test associated with the Elluminate system and administered in the second week will count as one "homework" assignment.

There are 14 quizzes that will be given during the quarter.

Of these, 7 will be taken on-line, worth 10 points each, and are given at the end of each lesson under the section "Evaluate." Your book has a practice quiz for each lesson. This practice quiz should be completed and studied before the Evaluate quiz is attempted. The calendar and the assignment schedule indicate by which dates you must complete your Evaluate quizzes. Evaluates must be taken during class time while your instructor is in the room. Sign-up to take the Evaluate, and after you are finished, print out your results and turn in the print out. Once you begin an Evaluate, you must finish it before logging out for the session.

There will be 7 written quizzes (paper-and-pencil) during the quarter. They are worth 10 points each and your two lowest written quiz score will be dropped. Everyone will take these quizzes on the same day and at the same time; there are no make-ups on these quizzes. These written quizzes are timed.

There will be four 60-point tests given during the quarter, lasting one whole class period each. These will be written by your instructor and you will take them off-line, as a paper-and-pencil test. A low test score can be replaced by your final exam score refigured on an 60-point scale.

The paper-and-pencil final exam, worth 100 points, will be comprehensive, covering all the content of the course, and will be given in a two hour time period. It is a "common" exam, one every 098 student must take. It will be held on Wednesday, March 19, time to be announced.

No make-up tests or quizzes will be given for any reason.

Attendance: 40 HW: 20 × 3 = 60
Quizzes: (7+5) × 10 = 120
Tests: 4 × 60 = 240
Final: 100
Total Points Possible: 560

The line between A- and B+ will be no higher than 90%.
The line between B- and C+ will be no higher than 80%.
The line between C- and D+ will be no higher than 65%.
The line between D- and F will be no higher than 50%.

I might lower those gradelines on the four tests if I feel that a test was a little harder than average, but I will never raise the gradelines beyond these levels.

All quizzes and tests in this course should be taken without the aid of your notebooks or other students. Referring to your notebooks or asking other students questions while taking a quiz or test is considered cheating and will be treated as such.

Cheating is a poor way to try to pass a course and the faculty here at BC has agreed to be tough about instances of cheating and to announce this in our syllabi. If caught, at the least cheaters will receive an irrevocable 0 on the test in question and other administrative action is possible that may, for example, affect continued student status. Don't do it.

No food or drink allowed in the rooms due to the certainty of hardware damage (sooner or later) if we allow it. Sorry.

The sole purpose of this classroom and the computers in it are for students to learn mathematics. Word processing, checking email, and web browsing is prohibited.

Disruptive talking and whispering is inappropriate in a college classroom; respect for and courtesy toward other students is expected at all times. TURN OFF ALL CELL PHONES AND BEEPERS WHILE IN THIS CLASSROOM.
