I teach this course in online and on-campus and hybrid (partially online, partially on campus) formats. In Spring 2012, I am teaching it in online mode.

Information from some of the OTHER INTERESTING COURSES I teach:

* First, here is a copy of my resume' (GwynethJonesCV-Dec11.pdf)

1. Various courses at the Seattle Community College District, such as OCEANOGRAPHY 100 at NSCC (Spring 2009 to present), GEOLOGY 101, ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE 100, ENVIRONMENTAL GEOLOGY, 1- to 5-day FIELD TRIP courses, etc.

2. Geology 101 at Lake Washington Technical College (Autumns 2010 & 2011).

3. ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE (Environmental Studies 105), MINERALOGY & PETROLOGY (Geology 200), OCEANOGRAPHY (Geology 105), and PHYSICAL GEOLOGY (Geology 101) at the University of Puget Sound

4. "EARTH SCIENCE AND THE ECOSYSTEM " (Natural Science 220) at Trinity Lutheran College

5. "GEOLOGY" (Humanities & Sciences 270) at Cornish College of the Arts

I taught this course in Autumn 2006. I was told that this was the first time a geology course has been offered at Cornish :-) The students learned about Earth materials, geological processes, and natural hazards, and put the course material into the context of the art world and society in general. Please check the link below for detailed information.

http://scidiv.bellevuecollege.edu/gj/Cornish.html - Autumn 2006

6. "SCIENCE IN CONTEXT: GEOLOGICAL & ENVIRONMENTAL CATASTROPHES" (Environmental Studies 325 / Science in Context 325A) at the University of Puget Sound - http://www2.ups.edu/faculty/gjones

These students do an AMAZING job with their semester-long community service-learning projects! Take a look at their websites! I also have posted my PowerPoint lectures, assignments, and links, which you may find interesting. Topics include volcanoes, earthquakes, landslides, floods, and groundwater.

http://scidiv.bellevuecollege.edu/gj/SCXTAutumn04.html - Autumn 2004

7. "PUGET SOUND DISASTERS: LANDSLIDES" (Geology 152) - Autumn 2004 at Highline Community College

I posted everything for this field-trip short-course here:

http://scidiv.bellevuecollege.edu/gj/HCC/HCCgeol152.html

8. "GEOLOGY OF THE NORTHWEST" (Geology 125) Saturday Class - Spring 2004 at Highline Community College:

I've posted everything here, for this Saturday class with lots of field trips:

Here are a few more tidbits:

I was the faculty speaker at BCC's graduation on June 17, 2005! It was a traumatic, thrilling, scary, fun, humbling experience! Several people have asked me to share my speech, so here it is! - GwynGraduationSpeech.html

Do Not Go Gentle into That Good [Volcanic] Arc (Adapted by Gwyneth Jones)

Do not go gentle into that good arc,
Old plates should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the drying of the slab.

Though wise sediments at their end know dark is right,
Because their chemistry had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good arc.

Good minerals, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail elements might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the drying of the slab.

Wild waters who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good arc.

Grave mantles, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind LILEs could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the drying of the slab.

And you, my Juan de Fuca, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce quakes, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good arc.
Rage, rage against the drying of the slab.

(With apologies to Dylan Thomas – “Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night”... I wrote this while in the throes of finishing my master's thesis, not coincidentally on the Cascadia subduction zone)

Some useful resources for students:

Selected extra-credit labs and homework from past quarters:

Free download of Adobe Acrobat Reader (so you can read and download .pdf files!)

Free download of MSN Messenger (so we can talk in "real-time"!) - http://www.microsoft.com/mac/default.aspx?pid=msnmessenger (for Macs) or http://messenger.msn.com/?client=1 (for Windows)

To get to BCC Main Campus, see my BCC Driving Directions or contact BCC directly. Please consider taking the bus! Several Metro routes (such as 222, 245, 271) drop you off right outside the science classrooms, and several other bus routes are a short walk away.
