4. "EARTH SCIENCE AND THE ECOSYSTEM " (Natural Science 220) at Trinity Lutheran College
- Students learn about environmental geology, and apply course concepts to case studies and local service-learning. Course information is at the link below. I taught it in Spring Quarter 2006, Autumn Quarter 2006, Autumn Semester 2007, and Spring Semesters 2009, 2010, 2011.
- http://scidiv.bellevuecollege.edu/gj/TLCnsci220.html - Autumn 2007
- http://nsci220.ning.com - Spring 2009, Spring 2010
- The 2 textbooks for NSCI 220 in Autumn 2007 & Spring 2009 are listed below. We used just the first one in Spring 2010; we had an environmental health and justice theme and all of the service-learning projects were food and gardening related. In Spring 2011 we used a standard environmental science textbook.
- Environmental Science: A Self-Teaching Guide (2005, paperback) by Murck BW, Published by Wiley - ISBN: 978-0-471-26988-5 - Here is Chapter 1 of the environmental science book. and

- Here is my Lavik Lecture workshop PowerPoint (April 17, 2010): JONES-Lavik-Paper.ppt or JONES-Lavik-Paper.pdf - After the PPT, we did hands-on paper crafts -- making recycled paper, origami cranes, and paper beads -- using only "found objects" such as junk mail, old magazines and newspapers, etc.
5. "GEOLOGY" (Humanities & Sciences 270) at Cornish College of the Arts
I taught this course in Autumn 2006. I was told that this was the first time a geology course has been offered at Cornish :-) The students learned about Earth materials, geological processes, and natural hazards, and put the course material into the context of the art world and society in general. Please check the link below for detailed information.
http://scidiv.bellevuecollege.edu/gj/Cornish.html - Autumn 2006
6. "SCIENCE IN CONTEXT: GEOLOGICAL & ENVIRONMENTAL CATASTROPHES" (Environmental Studies 325 / Science in Context 325A) at the University of Puget Sound - http://www2.ups.edu/faculty/gjones
These students do an AMAZING job with their semester-long community service-learning projects! Take a look at their websites! I also have posted my PowerPoint lectures, assignments, and links, which you may find interesting. Topics include volcanoes, earthquakes, landslides, floods, and groundwater.

Do Not Go Gentle into That Good [Volcanic] Arc (Adapted by Gwyneth Jones)
Do not go gentle into that good arc,
Old plates should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the drying of the slab.
Though wise sediments at their end know dark is right,
Because their chemistry had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good arc.
Good minerals, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail elements might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the drying of the slab.
Wild waters who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good arc.
Grave mantles, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind LILEs could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the drying of the slab.
And you, my Juan de Fuca, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce quakes, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good arc.
Rage, rage against the drying of the slab.(With apologies to Dylan Thomas – “Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night”... I wrote this while in the throes of finishing my master's thesis, not coincidentally on the Cascadia subduction zone)
